Amenable and contrarian bases on algebras of rational functions

We prove that several natural bases for the algebra [Formula: see text] of rational functions over a field [Formula: see text] are not amenable. In fact, Partial Fractions bases are shown to be contrarian. In the process, we introduce the notion of a spoiler, which helped us to focus on the reasons why the various bases considered are not amenable.

Abstract

We prove that several natural bases for the algebra [Formula: see text] of rational functions over a field [Formula: see text] are not amenable. In fact, Partial Fractions bases are shown to be contrarian. In the process, we introduce the notion of a spoiler, which helped us to focus on the reasons why the various bases considered are not amenable.
