Comparative Design and Characteristic Analysis of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors for Spindle Application

This paper addresses the design, electromagnetic characteristic analysis and performance evaluation of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) considering the rotor structure for spindle motor application. Two types of IPMSMs which are bar type and spoke type are compared for performance evaluation and machine determination to be manufactured. Based on surface response method (RSM) and finite element method (FEM), two optimized machines are investigated, and its speed control characteristics under specific load condition are addressed. Based on the derived motor parameters and control gain, simulation is performed, and experimental verification of manufactured machine is also provided to validate the analysis results.
