Environment Mapping and GPS-Based Trailer Parking Using Low-Cost Peripheral Sensors and Post-Processing Algorithms

In modern robotic devices, sensory feedback is an integral part of decision-making and data acquisition. As a result of their crucial role, high-end peripheral input devices such as GPS receivers and precise distance sensors have become more expensive and increasingly difficult to obtain. In this study, two distinct autonomous systems were developed using cheap ($2-$10 range) off-the-shelf components. The data received from these components was then compiled and processed by a series of software algorithms to reach a considerably higher level of reporting accuracy. The results gathered from these trials prove that a good portion of data acquisition can be done through post-processing, and the argument can be made that buying the most accurate sensors is not always the best solution.
