A case study of Manga as a self-regulation technique for internalizing disorders
The burgeoning popularity of Manga has led some readers to adopt it to cope with life stressors. This case report explores using Manga as a self-regulatory strategy for internalizing disorders. Mr. A was a 25-year-old graduate, unemployed male, receiving inpatient treatment for complaints of severe social withdrawal, extreme anxiety on social interaction or anticipated interaction, negative evaluation of self, world, and future, and increased Manga consumption over the last 9-10 years, which worsened in the past 6 months. However, over time, excessive reliance on Manga as the only coping strategy and not attending to the underlying mental health challenges led to its exacerbation and heightened social withdrawal. This case highlights the complex relationship between Manga consumption and mental health, emphasizing the importance of balanced use and a need to raise awareness among people about the significance of healthier coping mechanisms.
