The Implications of AI for Criminal Justice

Abstract This article summarizes key findings from a June 2024 Council on Criminal Justice convening that brought together diverse stakeholders to examine the integration of artificial intelligence in the U.S. criminal justice system. Through analysis of expert discussions and case studies, the convening coalesced around four themes for AI implementation and evaluation: values-driven adoption, critical engagement with AI tools, regulatory guardrails and governance, and comprehensive stakeholder involvement. While highlighting AI’s potential to enhance operational effectiveness, the article emphasizes the necessity of protecting individual rights, procedural fairness, and systemic safety and reliability.
