Minding the Machines
Abstract The implementation of AI is well underway in criminal legal systems, but there remains a narrow window of opportunity to prioritize values in how it is deployed. As against the raw allure of the technology, a values framework for AI in the justice space would prioritize transparency, equity, and the well-being of individuals and communities. It could also draw upon the sobering histories of earlier technologies in the criminal legal context, such as electronic monitoring and algorithmic risk assessment, for guidance.
