Physico–Chemical Characterization of Textile Effluent and TiO 2 /UV Treatment Contribution

Abstract Wastewater from the textile industry is a significant source of environmental pollution, making the development of effective treatment methods critical. This study aims to treat textile effluents from the Bouaké (Côte d'Ivoire) factory using a TiO 2 /UV photocatalytic process. Prior to treatment, samples were carefully characterized, revealing high levels of organic matter, with a total organic carbon (TOC) load of 21.22 mg O 2 /L and a chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 1560 mg O 2 /L, well above Ivorian standards. The influence of several factors on the degradation process was analyzed. Results from photocatalytic treatments on a mixture of two synthetic dyes showed degradation rates of 58.63 % for Turquoise Blue G 266% (BT G 266%) and 72.01% for Carmine Red S‐C (RC S‐C) after 120 min. What's more, after 4 h of treatment, the TiO2/UV system achieved removal rates of 86.26% for turbidity, 96.87 % for COD, 73.33% for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), and 20.59% for TOC. This method shows promise for sustainable textile wastewater management.
