This article examines and discusses the ethical implications of one of the pillars of Francis’s most evident gestures and Magisterium: spiritual discernment. Discernment is present Francis’s Magisterial speeches. The Synod on Synodality made discernment one of its pillars, along with the attitude of encounter and listening. This supports the understanding that Francis wanted to “introduce to the Church in the dynamic of discernment” (Puigròs, 1018). Therefore, this paper stresses the contribution that Pope Francis has made to popular-salvific-historical praxis and analyzes its relevance for social ethics. However, to understand this contribution, it is necessary to consider two things: first, the roots of discernment in Ignatian spirituality, and second, that this is a proposal for all members of the People of God, and therefore has implications for personal ethics.

Abstract

This article examines and discusses the ethical implications of one of the pillars of Francis’s most evident gestures and Magisterium: spiritual discernment. Discernment is present Francis’s Magisterial speeches. The Synod on Synodality made discernment one of its pillars, along with the attitude of encounter and listening. This supports the understanding that Francis wanted to “introduce to the Church in the dynamic of discernment” (Puigròs, 1018).
