This article presents and analyzes how Gustavo Gutiérrez practiced theology as an act of reflection on the reality of poverty and violence. This Latin American thinker, through his interaction with oppressed communities, proclaimed the unity of human and divine history. He also stripped soteriology of its futuristic elements to view it as a process of liberation embodied in time. His spirituality led him to delve deeper into the causes of poverty, for which he used methodologies from the social sciences of his time, such as the thought of Marx, Gramsci, and Freire, all interpreted from the perspective of Christian faith. We see how Gutiérrez’s legacy is currently expressed in: Feminist theologies that deconstruct the patriarchal image of divinity; Indigenous theologies that, from a biocentric perspective, question modern anthropocentrism as a cause of ecological imbalances, and other contextualized theologies. Finally, the paper reflects on how liberation is currently not conceived as a global transformation, as Gutiérrez did. Instead, it is viewed as the clamor and daily struggle of each oppressed person who unites with others who suffer, as is the case with members of LGBTQI+ grassroots ecclesial communities.
