Sleep duration and somatic risk factors for cardiovascular diseases in men aged 25—44

Objective. To establish associations of sleep duration with somatic risk factors for cardiovascular diseases in male residents of Novosibirsk aged 25—44 years. Materials and methods. In 2013—2017, a random representative sample of male residents of Novosibirsk aged 25—44 years was surveyed at the at the Institute of Internal and Preventive Medicine, a branch of the federal research center Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (n=427, the response rate was 61.5%). All respondents provided voluntary, informed consent to participate in the study. The general examination and medical history taking were performed according to the standard methods included in the WHO MONICA-psychosocial program1. Results. The analysis showed that 25.3% of men slept for 6 hours or less (p=0.0001). These individuals had higher body mass index compared to those who slept 9 hours; waist/hip circumference ratio compared to men who slept 8—9 hours per day; systolic blood pressure compared to men who slept 7, 8, and 9 hours; diastolic blood pressure compared to those who slept 7 hours; heart rate compared to men who slept 8 hours and 7—8 hours per day; triglyceride and glucose levels compared to those who slept 7 hours or 10 hours or more, respectively. Conclusion. A statistically significant increase in somatic risk factors for cardiovascular diseases in men aged 25—44 years with a sleep duration of 6 hours or less was revealed. Sleep duration is a correctible factor, so adopting healthy sleep habits can balance metabolism and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
