Sleep characteristics of high school students based on questionnaire survey: a pilot study
Chronic sleep deficit and its poor quality are associated with impaired memory, attention, learning, interpersonal interaction, as well as an increased risk of metabolic and affective disorders. Adolescents, especially high school seniors, are a vulnerable category prone to sleep deprivation due to biological and social factors. Objective. To describe the schedule, subjective quality, and duration of sleep in high school seniors, as well as to identify the factors affecting sleep disorders. Materials and methods. The study included 48 students in the 10th grade of high schools in Mytishchi, Russia. Participants were asked to complete the questionnaire and the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents. Statistical analysis of the obtained data was performed. Results. It was found that the majority (65%) of adolescents slept less than 7 hours per night, approximately 80% went to bed after 11:00 pm, and 58% experienced daytime fatigue or drowsiness. Study participants had insufficient sleep duration, a shift in their chronotype towards the evening type, and social jet lag. Conclusion. The data obtained emphasize the need for comprehensive preventive measures aimed at fostering a culture of healthy sleep and supporting the psychological and emotional well-being of adolescents.
