Seeded Optical Cavity for Resonant Beam-Based Communication
Optical resonant beam based communication (RBComm) systems offer a promising solution to current wireless communication challenges because their innate self-alignment, high carrier frequency, intrinsic safety features, and potential for high data rates. In this article, we experimentally demonstrate on-off keying (OOK) and binary frequency shift keying (BFSK) information encoding schemes using a gain medium free RBComm design based on a seeded optical cavity without locking. Four different cavity designs with lengths from 16 cm to 10 m and multiple seed laser sources with varying amounts of longitudinal modes were tested to characterize the unique dynamics of the seeded resonant channel and experimentally demonstrate RBComm. It was shown that multimodal resonance improved the power stability of the RBComm channel. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of information transfer using a resonant communication channel, providing insights for improved RBComm data rates and system models.
