Concomitant Extrahepatic Portal Vein Obstruction and Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: A Case Report and Investigation of Potential Pathophysiological Links
Abstract Extrahepatic portal hypertension (EHPVO) is the most common cause of portal hypertension in children, leading to structural abnormalities such as cavernomatous malformation and obstruction of portal vein. Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is caused by an absolute deficiency of insulin because of autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells. A 14-year-old boy diagnosed with EHPVO who was incidentally diagnosed with T1DM (confirmed by zinc cotransporter 8 antibody). The association between EHPVO and T1DM is not very well established, yet our case is one of the first few cases of someone having EHPVO developing T1DM.
