Social network analysis (SNA) in architectural conceptual design: classifying factors for social harmony – a comprehensive review

Purpose This paper aims to critically review the integration of social network analysis (SNA) in architectural conceptual design for addressing socio-cultural components within the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, with a focus on applications promoting social harmony. Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive literature review was conducted using the “Web of Science” database, initially identifying 108 relevant journal papers. Through in-depth analysis, 18 specific papers were selected for detailed review. The study employed bibliometric analysis combined with methodological review to examine publication trends, geographical distribution and methodological approaches. Findings The study reveals a significant rise in SNA-related publications in 2018 and a substantial upsurge in 2023, particularly in hybrid SNA methodologies. The Journal of Construction Engineering and Management emerged as the most productive outlet in this field. China produced the highest number of publications, followed by the United Kingdom. The integration of SNA under hybrid methodologies has proven particularly beneficial during the architectural conceptual stage. Research limitations/implications The review was limited to papers available in the “Web of Science” database and may not represent all relevant literature in the field. Practical implications The findings suggest that hybrid SNA methodologies offer promising approaches for architects and designers to incorporate socio-cultural components during the conceptual design phase, potentially leading to spaces that better promote social harmony. Originality/value By combining bibliometric analysis with methodological review, this study provides a comprehensive overview of SNA applications in architectural design with a focus on social harmony – an underexplored area. The paper identifies key perspective areas for future SNA applications in promoting social harmony within architectural contexts.
