Ce 3+ ‐Activated Lithium Rare‐Earth Oxonitridolithosilicates: A New Class of LED Phosphors with Similarities to Garnets (Adv. Funct. Mater. 44/2025)

Lithium Rare-Earth Oxonitridolithosilicates In their Research Article (10.1002/adfm.202515406), Markus Suta, Hubert Huppertz, and co-workers show how the brilliantly-green garnet-like emitting compound Li9RESi4N4O8:Ce3+ opens up exciting new frontiers for pc-LED technology, propelled by an entirely novel structure type within the class of lithium rare-earth oxonitridolithosilicates. This pc-LED "spacecraft" elegantly unites two defining features of the crystal architecture: the robust lithosilicate tetrahedral substructure and the distinctive mixed-anionic, square-antiprismatic coordination environment of the rare-earth ions.
