Case of Isolated Unilateral Ptosis Successfully Managed with Unani Medicines

Background: Ptosis, also called blepharoptosis, is defined by an unusual drooping of the upper eyelid, which may impede vision. It can be classified as congenital or acquired, with various etiological categories. The Unani system of medicine identifies ptosis as Istirkha' al-Jafn, attributing it primarily to disturbances in bodily humors. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of Unani treatments for a case of acute unilateral ptosis. Methods: The research employed a case study design, assessing a 59-year-old female patient at the National Institute of Unani Medicine, Bengaluru.Comprehensive clinical examinations, laboratory investigations, and MRI scans were performed to rule out other conditions. The treatment involved a regimen of classical Unani medicines.Specifically, Majoon Jograj Gogal (MJG) and Habb-e-Azaraqi were administered over 5 weeks. Results: Following the Unani treatment protocol, the patient's ptosis resolved completely after 5 weeks.Subsequent follow-ups confirmed that she remained symptom-free for 1 month. Conclusion: This case highlights the potential of Unani medicine in treating ptosis, particularly when attributed to phlegmatic disturbances, suggesting that holistic approaches may provide effective alternatives in managing ocular conditions.
