Abstract

The impact of the inclusion of transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) shape functions on the transverse momentum spectrum in <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"> <a:mi>J</a:mi> <a:mo>/</a:mo> <a:mi>ψ</a:mi> </a:math> production at the electron-ion collider (EIC) is investigated by considering the matching of the TMD factorization description at low transverse momentum with the collinear factorization description at high transverse momentum by means of the inverse-error weighting method. Despite large uncertainties from scale variations and the <c:math xmlns:c="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"> <c:mi>J</c:mi> <c:mo>/</c:mo> <c:mi>ψ</c:mi> </c:math> long-distance matrix elements, predictions for the differential cross section and its <e:math xmlns:e="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"> <e:mi>cos</e:mi> <e:mo stretchy="false">(</e:mo> <e:mn>2</e:mn> <e:msub> <e:mi>ϕ</e:mi> <e:mi>ψ</e:mi> </e:msub> <e:mo stretchy="false">)</e:mo> </e:math> modulation are obtained. We find that physical constraints are satisfied in case a process-dependent term is included for color octet production, but not in all cases when it is excluded. These numerical results support the analytic calculations in the work by Boer [.]. Future experimental data can thus test the validity of TMD factorization in <i:math xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"> <i:mi>J</i:mi> <i:mo>/</i:mo> <i:mi>ψ</i:mi> </i:math> production and explore the presence of nontrivial process-dependent effects in the soft-gluon resummation.
