Distributed temperature sensing-based forest fire detection with integrated alarm system

Forest fires occur frequently with severe consequences every year, in many countries. To mitigate these catastrophes and ensure public safety, emergency alert systems can play a crucial role. In this paper, we present an optimized wildfire detection and alarm system that integrates a Raman-based distributed temperature sensor (DTS) with a radio-based alarm system. The DTS system will take advantage of the existing optical fiber telecommunications infrastructure, using a 1064 nm pump source to ensure coexistence with data transmission within the network. The proposed DTS demonstrates effective temperature sensing with a spatial resolution of (31 ± 6) m and a temperature resolution of (19 ± 3) °C. This system continuously monitors temperature along optical fibers and when sudden temperature variations are detected, the FireTec Switch broadcasts alarm messages via FM radio near the affected area, enabling direct and timely broadcasting to car drivers in the vicinity. This approach offers an efficient solution to enhance wildfire detection and improve public safety. • We present a wildfire detection and alarm system that combines a Raman-based DTS with a radio-based alarm system. • The DTS will use the existing telecom optical fiber with a 1064 nm pump source to ensure coexistence with data transmission. • The proposed DTS demonstrates effective temperature sensing with sufficient resolutions for wildfire detection. • When DTS detects sudden temperature increases, triggers the FireTec switch, which broadcasts FM alerts to nearby drivers. • The system proposed offers an efficient solution to enhance early wildfire detection and improve public safety.
