A parametric study on cooling performance of liquid cooling plate with sinusoidal wave channels for lithium-ion batteries

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore how this design can improve the cooling performance of battery thermal management systems (BTMS). This study aims to design a new type of liquid cooling plate with sinusoidal wave channels. Design/methodology/approach The sinusoidal function is used to construct wave channels of the cooling plate. Computational fluid dynamics method is used to study the effects of coolant flow velocity, sinusoidal amplitude and wave numbers on Tmax, ΔT, Tave and Tσ of the battery and the pressure drop. Findings Compared with the traditional straight channel, the sinusoidal wave channel exhibits superior cooling performance. It effectively reduces Tmax by 5.56%, decreases ΔT by 3.95%, lowers Tave by 6.38% and reduces Tσ by 3.11%. Meanwhile, the coolant flow velocity, amplitude and the number of waves of the flow channel can be increased to improve the cooling performance of BTMS. Practical implications This study can provide guidance for the development of novel effective liquid cooling plates. Originality/value The design of liquid cooling plates with sinusoidal wave channels can be used in the BTMS to enhance the cooling performance.
