Book review: “Entrepreneurship in the Digital Era: Case Studies, Approaches, and Tools for Ecosystems, Business Models, and Technologies”

In the introduction of the book “Entrepreneurship in the Digital Age” provides an in-depth overview of the complexity and fragmentation faced in the field of digital entrepreneurship (DE). Antonia Schulz and Daniel Schallmo, highlight that DE not only expands the challenges that exist in traditional entrepreneurship, but also creates a very diverse and sometimes confusing literature landscape, they identify the need for a clearer and more structured understanding of DE, which can help researchers and practitioners to navigate the challenges that arise from rapid technological developments (Malaquias and Albertin, 2018). Although much research has been done, there is still a lack of integration and synthesis of existing knowledge. This shows that although many studies focus on certain aspects of DE, there is no clear consensus on its definition and scope. Then, the approach taken by the authors not only focuses on data collection, but also on a critical analysis of the existing literature, they pose relevant research questions, which include the current state of DE literature, the focus and critique of the literature and the direction of future research development. In this way, they seek to make a meaningful contribution to a better understanding of DE, as well as foster broader discussion among academics and practitioners. The authors of this book are Antonia Schulz and Daniel Schallmo. Antonia Schulz is a researcher who focuses on DE and innovation management. She is involved in research that explores how digital technologies influence entrepreneurial practices and how entrepreneurs can capitalize on the opportunities that arise from these technological developments. With a strong academic background, Schulz seeks to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the field of entrepreneurship. Then, Daniel Schallmo, as the second author of this book, also has expertise in entrepreneurship and innovation. He is known for his contributions to research related to digitalization and its impact on business models and entrepreneurial strategies. Both authors are committed to providing in-depth and relevant insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by entrepreneurs in the digital era. This book consists of 10 interrelated sub-chapters with very interesting discussions in it. Part 1, presents an in-depth analysis of DE through a systematic literature review approach and bibliometric methods. The author identifies that although DE has become an increasingly important topic, the existing literature is still fragmented and poorly integrated, thus posing challenges for researchers and practitioners to understand relevant concepts and practices. Using bibliometric methods, the author analyzes research trends, collaboration patterns and thematic focuses in the DE literature. The results of this analysis indicate that although interest in DE is increasing, a clear definition and comprehensive framework are still lacking. The author emphasizes the need for better knowledge synthesis to guide future research and help entrepreneurs identify opportunities in the digital era. Part 2 discusses how strategic entrepreneurship adapts and thrives in the changing digital context. Kreutzer highlights the importance of integrating business strategy and innovation in creating value in the digital era. He argues that companies must develop the ability to continuously innovate and respond to rapid market changes. The author also emphasizes that strategic entrepreneurship involves not only the creation of new products or services, but also the development of innovative business models and the use of digital technologies to improve operational efficiency (Kraus et al., 2022). Kreutzer identified the challenges entrepreneurs face in managing the uncertainty and risks associated with digital transformation, as well as the importance of building an ecosystem that supports collaboration between multiple stakeholders.Part 3 discusses how the industrial revolution 4.0 is creating new opportunities for data-driven entrepreneurs. It emphasizes that advances in technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things are not only changing the way businesses operate but are also paving the way for innovative business models. In their analysis, the authors identify sectors where entrepreneurs can leverage data to create value, improve efficiency and meet increasingly complex customer needs. However, the authors also caution that while these opportunities are promising, challenges such as data privacy, cybersecurity and the need for high technical skills must be addressed. Section 4 discusses the importance of entrepreneurial dynamic capabilities in the context of the value chain. The authors argue that amidst uncertainty and rapid change in the business environment, companies need to develop the ability to adapt, innovate and create value sustainably. Through an evaluation of case studies, the authors show how companies that successfully manage their dynamic capabilities can improve operational efficiency and responsiveness to market needs. They emphasize that these capabilities are not limited to product innovation, but also include process management, stakeholder relations and the development of flexible business models.Part 5 discusses how digital mindsets influence the performance and strategies of self-employed entrepreneurs. The authors argue that having a strong digital mindset is key to leveraging technology and innovation in running a business. Through qualitative analysis, the authors identify key characteristics of a digital mindset, including openness to learning, the ability to collaborate virtually and a deep understanding of data and analytics. The authors also note that while many self-employed entrepreneurs have technical skills, challenges remain in effectively integrating technology into their business models. Section 6 presents a systematic review of the adoption of corporate venture tools in the manufacturing industry. The authors emphasize that these tools, which encompass a range of strategies and practices to foster innovation and collaboration, are becoming increasingly important in the face of competitive challenges and rapid market change. Through a comprehensive literature analysis, the authors identify the different types of venture tools used by manufacturing firms, as well as the benefits and challenges associated with their implementation. They find that while many firms have adopted these tools to enhance innovation and efficiency, there is still a gap in their understanding and effective implementation in the field.Part 7 discusses the use of archetypes in logo design for startups. The authors argue that archetypes, as universal representations of characters and themes, can help create logos that are not only visually appealing but also resonate with the target audience. Through an analytical approach, the authors explore how archetypal forms can be used to convey brand values and build a strong identity. They show that logos designed with archetypes in mind can increase brand recognition and create an emotional connection with consumers. Section 8 presents the results of a quantitative study that explores the relationship between brand archetypes and color usage in the context of startups. Through data analysis, the authors found significant patterns between certain archetypes and color preferences, suggesting that color can serve as a powerful communication tool to convey brand values and character. The study highlights how startups can leverage an understanding of archetypes and color to create more effective logos and marketing materials, which in turn can increase brand recognition and loyalty.Part 9 discusses the classification of global companies, particularly in the context of Japanese high-tech startups. The authors identify the unique characteristics of these companies that operate internationally from the start, as well as the challenges they face in the global market. The authors also categorize these companies based on factors such as marketing strategy, product innovation and business model. The final section 10 explores the application of the lean startup methodology in the context of three Finnish micro-enterprises. Through case studies, the authors analyze the application of lean startup principles, such as minimum viable product development and customer feedback, and their impact on the innovation process in each company. The main strength of this book lies in the diversity of topics covered, covering various aspects of DE, from lean startup methodology to global enterprise classification. The case study-based approach provides practical insights that are relevant to entrepreneurs and academics, allowing readers to understand the application of theory in real-world contexts. In addition, contributions from various authors who are experts in their fields enrich the perspective and deepen current issues in DE. However, there is a drawback, although the book focuses on the digital context, some readers may feel that not all case studies or proposed approaches are fully relevant to rapidly changing market conditions. Limitations in geographical coverage and industry sectors may also reduce the generalizability of the findings to readers outside the context discussed. This book is intended for a wide range of readers, including academics, students, entrepreneurs and practitioners in the fields of entrepreneurship and digitalization because it provides various benefits of the book. For academics and students, the book provides a strong theoretical foundation and relevant case studies to explore the concept of DE. Entrepreneurs and practitioners can use the insights and tools presented to develop more effective business strategies that are responsive to market changes. The novelty of this book lies in the discussion of current issues in DE, such as the application of lean startup methodology and the classification of global companies, which provide new contributions to the existing literature.
