Tunable Microfluidic Cavity Enables Polariton Lasing in the Solution Phase

In the strong light-matter coupling regime, the physical and chemical properties of molecules can be modified due to the emergence of hybrid polariton modes. While most studies of solution-phase polariton chemistry have focused on vibrational strong coupling, electronic strong coupling (ESC) offers distinct advantages, including direct coupling to reactive electronic states and access to ultrafast spectroscopic tools. However, the development of solution-phase ESC has been severely limited by challenges in cavity fabrication. To address this, we introduce a versatile experimental platform based on a deformable microfluidic cavity that enables reliable and tunable access to solution-phase ESC. Our approach allows the rapid exploration of ESC across a wide range of species, concentrations, and cavity detunings. With our approach, we achieved polariton lasing using a concentrated solution of rhodamine 6G (R6G) in methanol. Polariton lasing of R6G has not been observed in films, likely due to their low damage threshold, but in solution, we achieve lasing by reaching the necessary excitation density. These results show that solution-phase ESC can broaden the range of molecular systems suitable for polariton lasing and open exciting opportunities for harnessing polariton condensates for new forms of photochemistry.
