Editorial: Farewell and thank you from your outgoing editor
In January 2021, I took over the editorship of the Journal of Managerial Psychology. I had been an associate editor at JMP since 2017 working first with Zinta Byrne and then Amanuel Tekleab as editors. The year 2021 was a fairly tumultuous time for most of us for many reasons. At JMP, we saw a dip in the number of submissions most likely due to slowdowns experienced by researchers all over the world. In fact, in the first year of my editorship, I recall frequently receiving email from authors and reviewers who were running into trouble completing revisions or reviews because they were facing hardships and illnesses in their work and personal lives. I am proud to say that the editorial team worked to give grace to authors, reviewers and to one another during these difficult months. By affording grace to complete tasks in the manner we all preferred, we were able to continue to publish high quality research and provide our authors with high quality feedback. In the years between 2021 and today, my aim as editor has been to grow and expand and we have successfully done so in multiple areas. We have seen a healthy increase in submissions in the past four years, and so we have expanded our associate editor team accordingly. We have also seen an increase in our acceptance rate and therefore output, providing high quality research that has the potential to make a real-world impact for managers and workplaces globally. Since 2021 we have published eight special issues on topics including women leaders, the physical work environment, models of work stressors, the year of the nurse, mindfulness, mentoring and coaching, artificial intelligence and cultural values of minorities. As of this writing, there are six special issues in progress. This growth and expansion of the Journal of Managerial Psychology would not have been possible without the work of our editorial team. The associate editors are a collegial, supportive group of scholars who take the work of peer review very seriously. They are quick to help one another when needed and have put together a number of sessions at conferences and meetings aimed at helping others become engaged in the peer review process as well as at spreading the word about publishing at JMP. The guest editors of the special issues have taken to heart the mission of the Journal of Managerial Psychology in their work assembling impactful special issues. Reviewers are critical to the work we do. All of us on the editorial team have been fortunate to work with reviewers who strive to provide authors with helpful feedback. The team at Emerald is incredibly supportive of our work and it has been a joy to work with all of them.In these last months of my editorship, I have worked closely with Emma Ferguson, her team at Emerald and our wonderful incoming editor-in-chief, Dr. Adam Vanhove, to leave the journal poised to continue the trajectory of growth and development. We are examining the workflow and practices at each step of peer review to make sure that the experience is streamlined for authors, reviewers and the editorial team. We expanded the editorial review board and created a new early career review board. We have also worked to more effectively involve the members of our editorial advisory board in the visioning and strategy for the journal. We have developed and begun working toward a strategic plan that expands our journal's global reach and growth.I hope it is abundantly clear that serving as editor of the Journal of Managerial Psychology these past five years has been source of joy and pride. I am not sure that I can adequately thank all of the people who have worked side-by-side with me to put out issues of this journal, but I will try: Thank you, all of you, who have edited, reviewed, authored and produced the manuscripts we published. I truly could not have done this work without all of you.
