Triangulating Intimacy and Forging Polyamorous Connections in 3
abstract: This article analyzes how Tom Tykwer's 2010 film 3 negotiates conventional conceptualizations of normative monogamy through its depictions of the long-term, committed couple Simon and Hanna and their affairs with the same man, Adam. When the truth about their relationships come to light, Tykwer's film concludes with an unexpected turn. Focusing on reproductive futurism (Lee Edelman), this analysis foregrounds how Tykwer's film seeks to problematize conventional sociocultural notions of monogamy, culminating in what seems like a polyamorous connection at the end of the film. However, the destabilization of monogamy embeds the newly created ménage-à-trois in normative familiarity and heteropatriarchal reproduction.
