Results of testing an antioxidant gel film for the prevention and treatment of palmar-plantar syndrome in cancer patients

The phenomena of dermatological toxicity, in particular palmar-plantar syndrome (PPS), quite often lead to disruption of the normal life of cancer patients up to their disability. The development of methods of prevention and therapy, as well as the rapid introduction into the routine practice of an oncologist of new drugs aimed at eliminating the side effects of antitumor drug therapy, is one of the priority issues in oncology. Objective. To investigate the efficiency of gel-film application among patients with hand-foot syndrome receiving anti-tumor drug therapy. Material and methods. 30 cancer patients with different severity of PPS were enrolled into the study. All patients received specific antitumor drug therapy (chemotherapy/targeted therapy), against the background of which the development of PPS of varying severity was observed. During the testing, patients used an antioxidant gel film for 4 weeks for the purpose of preventing and treating PPS. The effect was assessed weekly until the end of the testing. Results. The use of the studied gel film in patients with colorectal, gastric, breast, hepatocellular cancer, receiving antitumor drug therapy, has shown its effectiveness. Discussion. The gel-film applications in patients with colorectal cancer, stomach cancer, breast cancer, hepatocellular cancer receiving anti-tumor drug therapy showed its effectiveness. The positive effect of application was to reduce the degree of hand-foot syndrome and, as a consequence, clinical improvement in all participants. The positive effect of the application was a decrease in the severity of PPS syndrome and, as a consequence, clinical improvement in all study participants. Conclusion. The results of testing the gel film were positive, which allows us to recommend the use of this drug for manifestations of palmar-plantar syndrome among patients with malignant neoplasms in order to prevent further development of the symptom complex of dermatological toxicity.
