David Roger Jones Owen
Abstract Roger Owen was a pioneering researcher in solid and structural mechanics, whose groundbreaking work in finite/discrete element methods transformed the understanding of nonlinear problems in engineering and science. His research spanned constitutive modelling, algorithmic innovation and advanced numerical solution procedures, laying the foundation for modern computational mechanics, particularly in tackling challenges related to plastic deformation, friction contacts and fracture dynamics. His contributions enabled efficient large-scale simulations essential for fields such as explosion analysis, seismic loading and material failure. Beyond academia, he was a visionary entrepreneur, founding Rockfield Software Ltd, and twice recognized with the Queen’s Award for Innovation. A man of relentless curiosity and boundless energy, he excelled in sports and aviation. He is survived by his wife Janet (Pugh), daughters Kathryn and Lisa, and granddaughter Bethan.
