Comparative Study on the Application of Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber (HNBR) and Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomers (EPDM) in the Sealing Materials of Lithium Batteries

ABSTRACT The effects of the dosage of calcined kaolin on the processing performance, vulcanisation characteristics and basic mechanical properties of hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) were preliminarily investigated and compared. The results indicated that increasing the dosage of kaolin (from 20 to 60 phr) significantly increased the Mooney viscosity of EPDM but had a minor impact on its scorch time, vulcanisation time and torque. It improved tensile strength, elongation at break and other properties but impaired resilience. For HNBR, increasing the dosage of kaolin slightly increased its Mooney viscosity, had a minor effect on its vulcanisation characteristics, enhanced 100% modulus, tensile strength and other properties, but increased compression set.
