Gas Separations Utilizing Porous Organic Structures: Advances and Perspectives
Abstract The pressing global challenge of energy‐intensive industrial separation processes necessitates innovative, efficient, and sustainable alternatives. Porous organic solids (POSs) have emerged as a transformative class of materials, offering remarkable properties such as high surface area, tunable pore structures, and chemical versatility for gas separation applications. This review provides a detailed overview of recent advancements in the design, synthesis, and application of POSs, encompassing covalent organic frameworks (COFs), conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs), porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs), and hyper crosslinked polymers (HCPs). Key mechanisms, including molecular sieving, facilitated transport, and solution‐diffusion, are examined to elucidate the roles of POSs in achieving selective and energy‐efficient gas separations. The integration of POSs in mixed‐matrix membranes (MMMs) is highlighted as a promising strategy for enhancing their scalability and industrial applicability. Challenges such as scalability, long‐term stability, and compatibility in MMMs are critically analyzed alongside recent advancements addressing these barriers. Future directions emphasize the development of POSs with enhanced functionalization, structural stability, and innovative composite formulations to meet the growing demand for sustainable industrial gas separation technologies. This review aims to provide a comprehensive resource for researchers and industry professionals, bridging fundamental science with practical applications.
