Local measurement of aerosol retention for bubbly flows with a wire-mesh sensor

Retention of aerosols in pool scrubbing at the injector’s vicinity in the dynamic single bubble regime is fundamentally relevant but cannot be described with current jet-impaction capture models. Experimental measurements of local aerosol retention and hydrodynamics are provided with a Wire-mesh sensor of high spatial and temporal resolution located at a close axial distance to the injector. Strategies to account for the relevant contribution of noise and measurement artifacts are developed and implemented. Single bubbles are generated at the injector with similar sizes and frequencies as predicted from existing correlations. The measured decontamination factor of aerosols in the near-injector region is in the range of 1.3-1.5 for micrometer particles with a low dependency on the injection velocity. A relevant role of the deformation and acceleration during the bubble generation is postulated to explain the measured retention in the low bubbly Weber number range. A comparison with the low transfer of gas species under the same flow conditions underlines the distinct contribution of mass concentration boundary layer transfer. Reported results of inertia and diffusion-driven processes contribute to a better fundamental understanding and modeling of pool scrubbing in the bubbly regime.
