Extended reality technologies in vascular surgery: One small step or one giant leap?

Abstract
Extended Reality (XR) technologies have been increasingly utilized within healthcare, especially among surgical specialties. However, adoption has not been universal. Given the high complexity of vascular surgery diagnoses and procedures, as well as the prevalence of screen-based technology within the field, vascular surgery appears to be fertile ground for the develop and utilization of XR technologies. This manuscript provides an overarching view of the current utilization of XR within vascular surgery, including in the realms of surgical education, preoperative planning, operating room procedures, and patient education. As an innovative technology, XR has the potential to be either an incremental improvement in these arenas or a paradigm shift in our approach to surgical education and procedural-based care.
