Hydro dynamic cavitation for advanced treatment of secondary treated tannery effluent
Advanced treatment for secondary treated tannery wastewater is a highly challenging task, energy-intensive due to the presence of Chemical Oxygen Demand, high TDS, and turbidity due to the presence of total suspended solids (TSS). The main objective of this study is to reduce the TSS present in the secondary treated tannery effluent collected from the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP), thereby reducing the risk of water contamination and choking in the soil. The experiments are carried out to study the effect of hydro dynamic cavitation (HC) on secondary treated tannery effluent at different inlet pressures ranging from 2 bar to 10 bar with a constant increment of 2 bar. The study also investigates the effective use of ozone separately at flow rates of 2 LPM and 5LPM and in combination with cavitation at an inlet pressure of 7 bar, which is found to be provide the maximum TSS removal efficiency. Normally, these techniques are applied to oxidize refractory organic matter in the effluent but this study focuses on the removal of TSS, which proves to be a novel solution for environmental sustainability, paving a way for further research on advanced treatment of secondary treated tannery effluent. • Simple hydrodynamic cavitation is effective in reducing TSS. • Ozonation is advantageous which increases the dissolved oxygen content of the effluent. • Hydrodynamic cavitation and Ozonation have advantages of easy operation, better scalability and high effectiveness.
