Systematic mapping of health inequalities reporting in data dashboards in twelve European countries

Abstract Population health dashboards are interactive data visualisation tools that allow exploring a variety of indicators and building reports making health data accessible to a broad range of users. By enabling comparisons across population groups, dashboards can support public health policies aimed at reducing health inequalities at national and subnational levels. This study aimed to map the availability of population health dashboards and the extent to which they offer indicators to support health inequality monitoring in 12 European countries participating in the EU-funded Joint Action to Prevent NCDs (JA PreventNCD). We used a systematic review approach to identify dashboards and analyse their content, ensuring comprehensiveness and reducing selection bias. To be eligible, dashboards had to provide population health data, support customisable visualisations, be open-access, maintained by public organisations, cover the countries in our study, and include at least one inequality indicator. To identify dashboards, we conducted an online survey of national experts in public health monitoring and a systematic review of peer-reviewed and grey literature. Preliminary survey findings identified 234 dashboards reporting population health data across the participating countries. Country representatives will systematically review eligible dashboards and indicators. The PROGRESS-Plus framework will be used to map inequality dimensions across indicators. Final results are expected by November 2025. Workshop attendees will gain an overview of available dashboards supporting health inequality monitoring in 12 European countries. The session will highlight strengths and identify potential gaps in the countries’ monitoring practices, and foster discussion on which inequality dimensions warrant greater attention in their national contexts. By enabling comparisons across population groups, dashboards can support public health policies aimed at reducing health inequalities at national and subnational levels.
