Bridging the knowledge gap: a Knowledge Sharing System for environmentally sustainable healthcare

Abstract Transforming healthcare systems to become more environmentally sustainable is crucial for minimizing their ecological footprint and enhancing long-term resilience. Although various initiatives are already in motion, overall progress remains limited. One of the main obstacles lies in the fragmented and often difficult to access existing knowledge on environmentally sustainable practices. To overcome this challenge, the CN project is developing a Knowledge Sharing System (KSS), a structured, user-friendly platform that will allow healthcare professionals, researchers, and decision-makers to easily access, exchange, and use relevant knowledge to support environmentally sustainable transformation across the sector. The KSS model is informed by a variety of evidence, drawing from scientific and literature and experts consultations. It is structured on a taxonomy aligned with the EU framework for sustainable activities, encompassing key areas such as energy efficiency, circular economy and sustainable clinical practice. Co-designed with input from over 50 stakeholders, the model identifies effective knowledge-sharing channels, such as e-learning platforms and virtual communities, and methods like webinars, peer learning, and best practice manuals. It also acknowledges key barriers, including time constraints and limited resources. The resulting online platform will integrate five core components: a searchable repository of scientific and grey literature, a dedicated e-learning hub, a curated database of case studies, an interactive community of practice, and a stakeholder network to promote collaboration. Dissemination strategies will include targeted use of social media, podcasts, newsletters, and internal networks of partner organisations to ensure broad engagement. A user registration system will enable contributor mapping and enhance opportunities for collaboration, while analytics will inform continuous platform improvement and content development.
