A Complex Material, a Clear Need
As offshore wind development expands along the U.S. Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf, geotechnical engineers are facing an increasingly familiar, but challenging material: glauconite. This green, iron-rich mineral appears in multiple lease areas and is known for its unusual behavior under load. It presents as a sandy soil, but its friable structure crushes easily, changing it to a clayey soil in ways that can confound traditional pile drivability models.
