A rough-set based goal-oriented methodology for requirements analysis in information system design

Numerous surveys in the field of requirements engineering have revealed that a significant proportion of information system projects either fail to satisfy business needs or result in complete failure. One of the primary reasons for these shortcomings is the inadequate attention given to requirements analysis during the early stages of system development. To address this challenge, this paper introduces GRAInSD, a rough-set based G oal-oriented methodology for R equirements A nalysis in In formation S ystem D esign. The proposed approach integrates stakeholder modeling with decisional modeling, leveraging rough set theory to effectively manage imprecision by defining lower and upper approximations of data without requiring prior information or assumptions about the dataset. The applicability of the methodology is demonstrated through the analysis of goals of an institute examination system. In addition, the performance of GRAInSD is compared with state-of-the-art requirements analysis methods. The comparative evaluation shows that GRAInSD achieves efficient analysis with fewer computational operations than fuzzy-based techniques, primarily due to its use of ranking values.
