Impact and lessons learned from an HPV vaccination implementation community in ten Texas clinic systems
To share evaluation findings of an initiative designed to foster collaboration to increase adolescent vaccination rates across 10 clinic systems covering 18 counties in Texas, over three years. A mixed methods approach to the evaluation included online surveys, semi-structured interviews with collaborating organizations, and progress reports received four times a year. Surveys and interviews occurred from December 2022 to April 2024. Progress reports consisted of process and outcome metrics including HPV vaccination initiation and completion rates. The survey ( N = 39) revealed three critical areas influencing implementation that were further explored within qualitative interviews ( N = 12): robust partnership support, sustainable funding, and effective backbone organization facilitation. All clinic systems either maintained rates with no significant change or increased their HPV vaccination rates with observed statistical significance ( p < .05) and administered more than 25,000 vaccine doses. This collaborative approach, which aligned public health and primary care via intersectoral partnerships and included intentional backbone engagement, facilitated improvements of HPV vaccination initiation and completion rates. This initiative design can improve population health through reduction in rates of preventable cancers.
