Synthesis, Characterization, and Adhesion Testing of Rosin‐Grafted Xyloglucan for Sustainable Adhesive Applications
ABSTRACT This study details the novel one‐pot synthesis of a bio‐based polymer, xyloglucan‐grafted rosin (XG‐g‐Rosin). Addressing the critical need for sustainable, high‐performance adhesives, our facile method bypasses the multi‐stage complexity of typical bio‐polymer modifications, offering a greener, scalable alternative to petroleum‐based tackifiers. The grafting reaction was conducted in a single aqueous stage, successfully combining the biodegradability of XG with the rigidity and tackiness of rosin. Characterization via Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) suggested successful grafting, which was supported by subsequent elemental analysis and morphological changes. Thermal analysis revealed good thermal stability, with a char yield of 27% at 800°C. Furthermore, the natural antimicrobial protection of XG‐g‐Rosin was assessed by incubating XG‐g‐Rosin with bacteria, fungi, and yeast for 48 h using the spread plate technique. The microbial analysis showed that XG‐g‐Rosin lacks native antimicrobial resistance. The maximum pull‐off pressure achieved on copper substrates was 80 psi (0.55 MPa), demonstrating high efficacy and positioning this eco‐friendly material for applications in coatings and structural adhesives. This eco‐friendly polymer holds considerable promise for applications in coatings, adhesives, and biomedical fields.
