Supercharging scientific discovery
In a landmark move to reinforce Europe’s position as a global hub for scientific excellence, the European Research Council (ERC) is set to introduce ‘super grants’–a new funding mechanism offering larger and longer-term support for cutting-edge research. Announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the Choose Europe for Science conference in Paris, these grants are part of a broader strategy to attract top international researchers and foster innovation across Europe. Super grants will span seven years and include enhanced relocation support of up to €2 million, with €500 million earmarked for disbursement between 2025 and 2027. The initiative is framed within the newly launched Choose Europe for Science programme, which seeks to counteract global trends threatening scientific freedom, including funding cuts and political interference in research. Additional measures include the forthcoming European Research Area Act and the European Innovation Act, aimed at securing open scientific environments and accelerating the pathway from research to market. French President Emmanuel Macron and EC Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva joined von der Leyen in emphasising the importance of defending academic freedom and promoting inclusive, diverse research communities. With over two million researchers and leading roles in green and digital innovation, Europe continues to offer rich opportunities through schemes like Horizon Europe and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. The new super grants, alongside broader systemic support, underscore Europe’s commitment to maintaining its scientific leadership and ensuring research remains a cornerstone of progress. As von der Leyen declared: “Choose Science. Choose Europe.”
