Viability of intestinal cells in the presence of Blastocystis sp. – preliminary study

Blastocystis sp. is one of the most frequently detected protists during the examination of stool specimens. In the past decade, more and more studies have focused on the pathogenic potential of Blastocystis sp., but it still remains unclear whether this microorganism should be considered a pathogen or a commensal. The current study aimed to investigate the cytotoxic effects of two subtypes (ST) of Blastocystis sp., ST3 and ST7, on Caco-2 cells. Statistically significant differences were observed relative to the control group at each studied amount of Blastocystis ST3 as well as Blastocystis ST7 and at each studied time point. Additionally, it was shown that Blastocystis ST3, which is considered non-pathogenic, caused greater cytotoxicity to Caco-2 cells than Blastocystis ST7, which is commonly considered to be more pathogenic. It is possible that Blastocystis ST7 interacts with Caco-2 cells and influences their survival. To obtain a complete picture, further research is needed.
