Numerical hydrodynamic model of Awasan Bay, Surigao Del Norte, Philippines for tidal energy resource characterization

The Philippines is committed to reducing carbon emissions by shifting to renewable (e.g., tidal) energy. However, despite its abundant tidal energy resources, the localized characterization of its behavior in the country (e.g. Awasan Bay) remains limited. To address the gap, the researchers simulated a hydrodynamic model of Awasan Bay using TELEMAC 2D and validated using in situ data (ADCP transect survey). Based on the site conditions, a turbine blade is designed using the Blade Element Momentum Theory (BEMT). The designed blade performance is then used to estimate the Annual Energy Produced (AEP). The hydrodynamic model validation presented an RMSE of 0.399 m/s and Pearson correlation coefficient (r) of 0.745, with the prospected site (9.9076, 125.565) having a 44 m water depth, a frequent velocity of 1.15 m/s, and a close proximity to the local grid. The NACA 63-815 based turbine blade is estimated to have an AEP of almost 165 MWh/year. Five (5) of the designed turbines can power the seven (7) villages in Nonoc Islands, while one (1) can power the street lights of Surigao City in a year. This study provides insights into harnessing tidal energy in Awasan Bay, Philippines, which is essential for the development of sustainable energy and serves as a model for similar regions.
