Trust Dynamics in Socio-Political Institutions: A Comparative Analysis of Perceptions Among Younger Generations in Old and New Russian Regions
The significance ofthis study lies inunderstanding the mechanisms driving social and civic integration among young individuals residing innewly incorporated Russian regions. Central tothese processes isthe degree oftrust they place ingovernmental bodies and public institutions. Drawing upon comprehensive empirical data collected bythe researcher, the paper undertakes adetailed comparison between the patterns ofinstitutional and personal trust exhibited byRussian youth hailing from established versus recently annexed regions. Key findings indicate distinct variations intrust levels across regional demographics. Specifically, younger inhabitants ofnewly integrated territories exhibit greater confidence both incentral government entities aswell aswithin their local networks offamilial, communal, and societal connections. This phenomenon can beattributed primarily totwo interrelated dynamics: firstly, the transformative experience ofbeing formally absorbed into the Russian federation; secondly, prolonged exposure tolife under conditions associated with ongoing armed conflicts, which has fostered robust community bonds and cohesive social structures. Moreover, the investigation explores how recent geopolitical developments-such asthe commencement ofspecialized military operations-affect perceptions oftrustworthiness among youth populations. Itreveals that whereas intraditionally recognized Russian areas, these events lead todiminishing levels oftrust, nosimilar erosion occurs innewer territories. Thus, incorporation into the Russian nation-state emerges asthe pivotal determinant shaping attitudes toward institutions and social relationships alike.
