Role of Ayurvedic diet and herbs as dietary adjuncts in the management of bronchial asthma: An overview
Abstract Pathya , a fundamental concept in Ayurveda, refers to dietary and lifestyle practices that promote physiological balance and support the integrity of the Dhatus (major structural components of the body) while also promoting mental well-being. Bronchial asthma is a widespread chronic respiratory disorder associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Its clinical presentation and pathogenesis closely align with Tamaka Shwasa described in classical Ayurvedic literature. Recent evidence underscores the impact of diet on the development, progression, and management of asthma. This review examines the concept of Pathya Ahara (wholesome diet) in the context of asthma and highlights the role of traditional Ayurvedic herbs administered through Pathya Kalpana (therapeutic dietary preparations) such as Manda , Peya etc . It emphasizes the comparative analysis of Pathya Ahara recommended by different Acharyas , categorizing food groups ( Ahara Vargas ) suited for Tamaka Shwasa . A thorough review of classical Ayurvedic texts and contemporary scientific literature was undertaken to assess their potential in asthma management. The incorporation of traditional Ayurvedic herbs into Pathya Kalpana may offer a supportive approach to the prevention and management of asthma. Further clinical research is needed to establish their therapeutic efficacy and explore their integration into modern asthma care strategies.
