Book Review of “Land Issue: The Law and Practice” by Tesfaye Neway, 2024 (Amharic)

The book review focuses on the content, approaches and organization of the book. It suggests that the book should be read from the perspective of the discourse on the law’s role in development. It also suggests that the trend in the marketability of usufruct (alaba) in land use rights could have been given more prominence in the book. As highlighted in the review, the book duly deals with the core themes under property law, land rights, the Ethiopian context, laws and powers of various executive organs in relation to land, land administration institutions and problems relating to the legislative, executive, and judicial organs. It also examines about sixty decisions of the Federal Supreme Court Cassation Division and the House of Federation. The book represents the search and inquiry into suitable land law and its implementation, the success of which can positively contribute to Ethiopia's development and improved livelihoods. As land and other natural resources are among any country's key assets, the legal, policy, and institutional frameworks relating to land are issues of continuous discourse. In this regard, the author deserves credit for sharing his wide-ranging experience as a teacher, writer, researcher, and judge. The book is a valuable work for an audience interested in land law, its institutional framework, and implementation.
