Dharti Ka Doctor: A paradigm-shift in automated soil diagnostics and farmer-centric soil health management

AbstractAgricultural production, food security, and ecological resilience are all dependent on soil health. Despite having a network of 8,272 soil testing labs with a potential capacity of 1.2 crore analyses per year, India tests less than 40 lakh samples because of underutilized infrastructure, sporadic adherence to ICAR guidelines, and insufficient micronutrient testing. The Dharti Ka Doctor (DKD) automated soil testing device was developed by Bharuwa Agri Science Pvt. Ltd. to get beyond these limitations, and it was verified scientifically by ICAR-Central Soil Salinity Research Institute (CSSRI), Karnal. Compared to traditional laboratory techniques, DKD can evaluate 12 macro- and micronutrient parameters in 30 minutes with >92% accuracy, making it a portable, farmer-friendly “mini-lab.” It provides encrypted soil health data and crop-specific fertilizer recommendations across organic, inorganic, and integrated systems, and it is coupled with a multilingual mobile application. Accredited with Patent No. L-136121/2023 and certified by CE EN-61010-1:2010/A1:2019/AC:2019-04, DKD makes soil testing broadly accessible by combining cost, scalability (50 samples/day), and transparency. Beyond diagnostics, it promotes sustainable cropping, increases the efficiency of fertilizer usage, and, by maintaining the ideal balance of nutrients in the soil, improves the quality of aromatic and medicinal plants. This article aims to present the validation, operational advantages, and far-reaching implications of DKD as a pioneering solution tailored to strengthen farmer-focused soil health management in India. Thus, DKD is an example of a game-changing invention that moves soil health management away from centralized labs and toward a decentralized, farmer-centric approach.
