Botany, phytochemistry, and hepatoprotective properties of Kalmegh [Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Wall. ex Nees]: A review

AbstractAndrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Wall. ex Nees, commonly known as Kalmegh, is a highly esteemed medicinal herb renowned for its extensive therapeutic properties in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda. Despite its long-standing use, the precise molecular mechanisms underlying the activity of its bioactive compounds remain insufficiently elucidated. Among its diverse pharmacological effects, the hepatoprotective role of Kalmegh has garnered significant attention due to its ability to counteract and alleviate inflammation, oxidative stress, and modulate cellular pathways that support liver regeneration. Moreover, Kalmegh demonstrates a broad spectrum of therapeutic benefits, including antimicrobial and anticancer properties of liver, highlighting its exceptional versatility and relevance in modern pharmacology. The plant’s pharmacological potential is largely attributed to its rich phytochemical composition, dominated by flavonoids, diterpenoids, and polyphenols, with andrographolide recognized as the principal bioactive constituent. These compounds exhibit diverse biological activities, notably antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective effects, which collectively underpin the plant’s therapeutic significance. Deciphering these mechanisms is crucial to bridging the gap between traditional wisdom and evidence-based modern medicine, thereby facilitating its integration into clinical practice. This review emphasizes the necessity for rigorous investigations to assess the safety, efficacy, and potential synergistic interactions of Kalmegh with conventional therapeutic agents, ultimately opening new horizons for drug discovery and holistic healthcare solutions.
