A hybrid control strategy based on terminal sliding mode control for switched reluctance motors
Purpose This paper aims to study a hybrid control strategy using terminal sliding mode control (TSMC) with an improved reaching law (IRL) presented for switched reluctance motors (SRMs). Design/methodology/approach First, a hybrid control strategy combining model predictive torque control (MPTC) with torque sharing function control (TSF) is substituted to reduce the torque ripple under different conditions. Then, the TSMC based on an IRL applied in the speed controller is developed to improve the approaching speed and suppress the chattering of the system, thereby acquiring a satisfactory dynamic performance and anti-disturbance ability. The performances of the 12/8 SRM control system are evaluated to validate the proposed control scheme. Finally, the simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme by comparison with MPTC and TSF using conventional TSMC. Findings Results verify the superiority of the proposed control scheme with respect to the torque ripple suppression, dynamic response and anti-disturbance ability. Originality/value The proposed hybrid control strategy is useful for SRMs to reduce the torque ripple and improve dynamic performance.
