With increasing age, the functional and structural conditions of the musculoskeletal system change—even in highly motivated athletes. So-called "masters" sports are gaining popularity but carry age-related risks, particularly concerning the foot. Football, as a contact sport involving abrupt changes of direction, is especially prone to specific overuse injuries and trauma. This narrative review explores sport-specific challenges, prevention strategies, and therapeutic options for foot injuries in football players over the age of 35.

Abstract

With increasing age, the functional and structural conditions of the musculoskeletal system change—even in highly motivated athletes. So-called "masters" sports are gaining popularity but carry age-related risks, particularly concerning the foot. Football, as a contact sport involving abrupt changes of direction, is especially prone to specific overuse injuries and trauma. This narrative review explores sport-specific challenges, prevention strategies, and therapeutic options for foot injuries in football players over the age of 35.
