No guts, no glory: IL-26 in host-microbiota interactions
The gastrointestinal tract is composed of epithelial cells, immune cells and microbiota that interact dynamically to preserve homoeostasis. In this issue of The EMBO Journal, Salloum et al, (2025) exploit zebrafish models to show that bactericidal activity of interleukin-26 (IL-26), a poorly understood cytokine produced by innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), controls microbiota composition and gut epithelial homoeostasis.
