Energy transition in Latin America: an engine for economic growth and development?
Abstract The global energy transition must balance decarbonisation with equity, especially in fossil fuel-dependent regions like Latin America. This study analyses six Latin American economies (1990–2020) to assess whether renewable energy adoption drives economic growth and development. Using national energy balances and Granger causality tests, we find renewables boost GDP and reduce CO2 emissions but show weak links to social equity. Policy tailored to national contexts is critical for a just transition.
