Effect of hot extrusion on mechanical properties of Al 2 O 3 /Al composite prepared by spark plasma sintering
Abstract The Al 2 O 3 /Al composite was prepared by spark plasma sintering. The effect of hot extrusion on microstructure and mechanical properties of the Al 2 O 3 /Al composites were investigated. The result shows that the sintered Al 2 O 3 /Al composite obtained by spark plasma sintering has more pores. There are more discontinuous Al 2 O 3 films surrounding the surface of the aluminum powders. After hot extrusion, the discontinuous Al 2 O 3 films are broken into Al 2 O 3 particles, with the form of the Al – Al 2 O 3 – Al interface. The ultimate tensile strength of the extruded Al 2 O 3 /Al composite increases significantly. The maximum ultimate tensile strength of the extruded Al 2 O 3 /Al composite is 175.7 MPa, which can be attributed to the Al – Al 2 O 3 – Al interface.
