Fall Risk and Social Determinants of Health in Older Adults in a Medically Underserved Community

Falls are a major health concern among older adults, particularly in medically underserved urban communities. This study assessed fall risk in adults aged 50+ using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s STEADI (Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries) toolkit, with 25 participants completing screenings and social determinants of health surveys. Spearman’s rho correlation evaluated STEADI’s accuracy in identifying individuals who reported falling in the past year. Phi coefficient correlation explored links between social determinants and fall history. While STEADI effectively predicts fall risk, limitations exist for those in underserved populations. Findings highlight the need for improved fall prevention strategies and equitable health care access for at-risk groups.
